Empath: A Complete Guide for Developing Your Gift and Finding Your Sense of Self

by Judy Dyer

The first question, we the reader, need to ask is what is an empath? An empath is a person with an open spirit; they unconsciously sense things in the unseen and the seen realm to the point where it can become a burden. Empaths pick up on the energy of the people that surround them. They have a natural ability to tune into the feelings of others. Empaths intuitively know the intentions and motivations of others. An empath is born that way.

The author continues with characteristics of the empath. She feels that empaths are extremely humble, they shy away from compliments and would rather praise someone else than receive it. They open up to anyone who will listen. Similar to the characteristics of the middle child, the empath is non-aggressive, non-violent and is quick to become the peacemaker between people. The inability of the empath to express their feelings is the result of a traumatic event, as a child they are told that children need to be seen but not heard.

Empaths need to learn to talk things out as humans are wired to express themselves when they feel a burden, it is how healing takes place. Empaths have a sensitivity toward movies, TV. Videos, and news broadcasts that depict scenes of violence or physical or emotional pain and trauma. Empaths work in careers that enable them to help others whether it’s with animals, nature or people. They are passionate about their work and their dedication o others. You will often find empaths in volunteer positions dedicating their time to help others without pay or recognition. On pages 8-9, the author delineates the different kinds of empaths. She also gives the common empaths traits on pages 10-15.

Dyer offers some helpful tips to assist the reader in fully embracing your gifts: appreciate and honor your state of consciousness; identify the difference between thought consciousness and emphatic consciousness; and trust in intuition. There are many things that can be done when you learn to effectively handling energy. It is the divine right of the reader to learn how to navigate this powerful terrain of energy so that you can use it in a way that benefits you, the reader, and others.

The book has some wonderfully interesting sections to ponder. As the author states: “There is much more to being an empath than what you have read in this book. It is a good jumping off point to people who identify themselves as empaths. Dyer has specific things to do to improve the life of the empath. At 92 pages, it has a great deal of information and direction forward. news broadcasts that depict scenes of violence or physical or emotional pain and trauma.
