Message from the Editor
There have been many concerns by world figures on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Stephen Hawking, the eminent British physicist, warned that the development of full artificial intelligence (AI) could spell the end of the human race; Of major concern is AI and misinformation are supercharging the risk of nuclear war. Judea Pearl, an Israeli-American computer scientist and philosopher. has groundbreaking work in probabilistic reasoning and causality has laid the foundation for much of modern AI.
Pope Leo XIV has raised concerns about the impact of AI on society, particularly regarding human dignity, justice, and labor. He has stressed that AI should serve humanity and not diminish or replace it.
He has also emphasized the need for ethical frameworks and responsible governance of AI Pope Leo recently stated that journalists and communications professionals have a particular duty to focus on truth in order to ensure that all people become “discerning participants” in a meaningful process of teaching, learning, and caring, He stated “ The speed and accuracy of AI-powered scams make them an increasing threat to consumers—especially as these technologies advance. Earlier this year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Francisco division issued a warning that AI scams are on the rise. “As technology continues to evolve, so do cybercriminals' tactics,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp in a press release.
Artificial Intelligence scams ore rapidly increasing. AI scams use artificial intelligence tools to target consumers in very sophisticated and personalized ways. Unlike traditional scams, which tend to rely on generic or poorly executed tactics, AI allows criminals to create websites, emails, and impersonations that are startlingly authentic and believable. With AI scammers can quickly launch fraud campaigns on a massive scale—or zero in on specific individuals using data gathered from social media or other platforms. A powerful example of an AI scam is Online scammers impersonate pope's brother.
Attackers are leveraging AI to craft highly convincing voice or video messages and emails to enable fraud schemes against individuals and businesses alike,” FBI's Tripp said. We have tried to provide a comprehensive overview of AI in this issue of Profiles in Catholicism.
Hundred of thousand of children are dying because of Doge cuts to USAiID blamed for 300,000 deaths — most of them children, These cuts were made in part to reduce taxes on Trump’s millionaire colleagues. A study published in The Lancet estimates that if the current cuts continue, more than 14 million additional deaths could occur by 2030, including over 4.5 million among children under age 5. Donald Trump and his MAGA cult members must ethically share in the responsibility of the deaths of these children.
Children are facing a variety of other risks globally There are hundreds thousands of children facing starvation. Last year was the most devastating year for children in armed conflict in two decades, according to the new annual report from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The UN verified 41,370 grave violations against children in 2024, a 25 percent increase over 2023, the previous record high. Numerous reports highlight a significant increase in the number of child amputees in Gaza, with the UN calling it the “highest number of child amputees per capita in the world”. In June 2024, officials estimated that averages of 10 children were losing at least one limb each day in Gaza.
One final Comment. Elon Musk is antisemitic, Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk to lead the new "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) in November 2024. At the time of this appointment, Elon Musk had faced previous accusations of antisemitism, particularly in November 2023 when he endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory on X (formerly Twitter). This incident resulted in widespread criticism, including from the White House. According to The New York Times, the White House spokesperson called it "an abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate". Therefore, given the timing of the appointment and the prior controversy surrounding Musk's social media activity, it's reasonable to conclude that Trump was aware of the allegations of antisemitism against Musk when he was hired.
Hopefully this will affect future purchases of Teslas .and dining at Tesla Diner in Los Angeles.
A Quote to Remember
AI, particularly generative AI, may facilitate the spread of fake news and disinformation, potentially undermining the educational process by promoting repetition over critical thinking.

Prayers
A Prayer to Protect People from Artificial Intelligence Scams and Related Crimes
Lord, Creator of humanity, of our ingenuity, intelligence and creativity, we have been given the grace of innovation to inform our living growth in society, with and for one another and, from slight, and unlikely beginnings, we begin to understand the mystery of communication which, Lord, you have made possible throughout the
universe, whereby signals of sound and images traverse the spaces between places, near and far, far and wide entering our own hearts.
Saint Isidore of Seville, even in the sixth century your knowledge and encyclopaedic mind, fitted you to be a patron of the internet – pray and intercede in the quickness of a grace transmitted to God!
Saint Clare of Assisi, you became a patron of television screens heralding a new age of technology as, unable to rise from your sickbed, the very walls of your cell were transformed to depict the Mass to which you could no longer rise and go: so a miracle, foreshadowed the new, helping technology – pray and pray for us.
Many interconnected, incremental changes have made arise a vast, virtual space, drawing on the richly beautiful works of all, old and new, and the ugly, empty places, of spreading, malignant imaginations, giving it a platform as never before and still spreading.
Now, webs of inter-connection, now span the world: an electronic rope bridge between us or a net to trap and entrap us into open pits?
Information, like rain, pours down upon us, watering so many good projects and places, making available whole libraries and collections of articles, books, works of art, communication across cultures, all within reach of a plug and a button, a cable or a signal, all of a sudden, traversing continents, from village to city and city to homestead.
But, as the storms assemble, so a deluge now gushes across beautiful meadows, hills, and valleys, but equally seething cesspits, rat-ridden alleyways and flushing the squalor of man-made creation into the waters we drink, not discriminating, incapable of judgement, seizing all and sweeping it on, turning streets into tunnelling tempests of rubbish and entering, unfiltered, into our homes and our hearts.
And so arises a kind of technological charge, indiscriminately accusing, dressing up, distorting, substituting false faces for gain or worse, to persecute, to pillory, to drive from the public place all who would protest and seek to do good, to clean the rivers and drain off the sludge and sieve what is worthwhile from what is destroying us.
So this creature, strident and unrestrained, even unrestrainable, roves overall, whether swamp or lake, mixing up everything, unable to sort
good from ill, and towering, like an electrical storm, above our cities and skies, threatening destruction and striking, randomly, with surges of power, what is nothing more than plus and minus and many inputs.
We need grace, your gift Lord, like bedazzled beads of moisture across the networks, to shine in the light of a new dawn: we must ask and even beg for the grace to carefully tread this silky tightrope between worshipping our own work, impressive as it is, and humanizing what otherwise seems likely to spread into our brains.
Oh Blessed Carlo Acutis, you filtered through to what was good and found mystery upon mystery which you documented as the Eucharistic miracles which transcend our time and take us to Christ in the way that He is present, both ancient and new, and made a kind of Holy presence amidst the charging particles which know, like creation as a whole, who is the Lord of all and more splendid still.
Blessed Carlo Acutis, we ask for your intercession: help us control the floodwaters coming forth from every nook and cranny, casting vivid reflections of hallucinated and falsified realities, under the glamour and shine of the water: Deepfake, fraud and scams, gash and cut, leaving wounds: “deep scars in the hearts of those who suffer it”.
Mary, you need to ask your son for help, as we have made what is beyond us to control and threatens our daily life with domestic floods.

A Prayer for the Hundreds of Thousands of Children Who have Died from the United States’ Stop of Funding to USAID
Lord, the greed and selfishness of the powerful and the rich deprive the children of their urgent needs, for food, medicine, care and protection. Lord empower good people to respond with generosity and save the thousands of children in dire need. May your grace and inspiration bring great changes in mind and heart of the powers that can help and save the children.
Amen.

A Prayer for the Limbless Children in Gaza
O Lord, so many of your children are suffering. Console them in their agony.. Your son is being crucified again in those who are suffering. You look on those who suffer as you look with love on your son.
Move those who are in charge to take pity on those who suffer and make decisions for peace and not war and conflict.
Amen
The UN has called Gaza the region with the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world. According to Save the Children, an average of more than 10 children per day have lost one or both legs in Gaza since the recent escalation of conflict began in October 2023.)
A Prayer for poisoned Chinese children
Oh Lord, we pray for the health and safety
of the children who were poisoned.
We pray that the authorities will do what is necessary
to see to it that this does not happen again.
We pray for the families and friends of these hurt children
that al might be well with them. Oh Lord, we pray for all children around the world
who are in danger from lack of food,
lack of medical care, and lack of responsible treatment by their national and local authorities.
We pray for all, children, young adults,
and the elderly.
God bless us one and all.
Amen
A Prayer for Strangers in a Foreign Land
Lord God, help us to remember those who
tonight will go to sleep unfed and unwelcome,
strangers in foreign lands, people who have
fled for their lives and are far from their homes.
We lift up to you those who are escaping
persecution and conflict, having fled death,
torture or ruthless exploitation.
So many carry wounds, mental and physical.
So many have suffered greatly.
Lord Jesus, give us more of your compassion
for their plight, soften our hearts to their situation,
and help us follow your lead in seeking justice and
mercy on their behalf.
We pray for an end to the wars, poverty and
human rights abuses that drive desperate people to
become refugees in the first place.
We give thanks for people working in troubled
countries and ask for more of
your blessing so we can bring life, dignity and hope to
those that remain.
We thank you that you are Lord of all the earth and all
its people are loved by you.
We pray these things in the name of your
Son who was himself born into the troubled life of a refugee.

Prayer for Those in Texas
Oh Lord, we are devastated by what has happened to the innocent people in Texas. Children, women and men have been killed. Many others injured. We pray for them. And we pray that the rescuers may be able to find and care for the few that might have survived. We pray for their families who have lost their loved ones. We pray that those injured may be well cared for and return to healthy lives.
Oh Lord, we pray that the survivors of this horrifying event may be able to endure their grief and in due time return to living lives of some happiness and hope, never forgetting those they have lost but taking them with them to the future in their hearts.
Oh Lord, we pray that society will support the survivors and work diligently to try to make sure that such a disaster will not happen in Texas again, or anywhere on earth. We promise to do what we can to support such efforts.
May God bless us all.
Yours in hope,
Amen

Birthday Celebration
As we celebrate America‘s birthday, we note with genuine gratitude, the many ways in which our country is – understatement – remarkable!
But we also acknowledge that remarkable does not mean perfect. Indeed, too often in our 250 years “the better angels“ of our nature have been pushed aside as a consequence of a distorted ethnocentrism and a destructive xenophobia.
Such matters are, alas, also a part of our nation‘s history. And such matters are apparent especially in an epidemic of antisemitism. The statistics are alarming; the consequences only more so in undermining the insistence on freedom and equality at the heart of our nation‘s journey.
So on this national birthday, we call on people of goodwill everywhere to stand against bigotry in all its manifestations and to embrace, even fight for the essential conviction that “all men [and women] are created equal.“
This is our calling, our mission, our creed.
